NSW: Hoax caller targets six Sydney families
SYDNEY, Aug 2 AAP - Police are hoping a phone trace will lead them to a hoax caller
who has been contacting Sydney families and saying their daughters are dead.
Police issued a warning yesterday about a woman claiming she was a police officer who
had made three prank calls telling families in Sydney's west that their daughters had
been killed in a car accident.
Three more families had contacted Penrith detectives about similar prank calls since
yesterday, police said today.
Penrith Police Inspector Trish Bourke said Telstra had been notified and police expected
a phone trace to be completed this afternoon.
"Hopefully we'll then get an offender," Insp Bourke said.
The caller identifies herself as a police officer before asking the family whether
their daughter is at home.
When the relative answers "no", they are told their daughter has been killed in an
accident, usually a car crash.
Insp Bourke said the caller, who was believed to be aged in her 20s, appeared to know
the victims' movements and vital personal details, such as names.
Police believe there is a common link between the victims but it has not yet been established.
The women the caller claimed had died were of varied ages and lived in different parts
of Penrith.
