NSW: Kids excursion to see drowned mate s body court

A court has been told that children at a Sydney school had been taken on a bus trip like a
school excursion to view the body of a six-year-old fellow student who had drowned.

The boy's mother SUZANNE DELANEY has told the New South Wales Supreme Court that she did
not organise the trip, did not want it and she had been horrified.

She says the school had hired a bus to take the students there, and children had been given
the chance to have their photos taken with her son SHAUN.

Mrs DELANEY said the viewing was organised by people who counselled the rest of the
children at Birchgrove Community School after SHAUN drowned during a school camp at Galston on
Sydney's north-western outskirts, in March 1991.

Mrs DELANEY, 37, formerly of Dulwich Hill and now of Summerland Point, near Taree, has sued
the inner Sydney school, run by a committee of parents, for negligence over SHAUN's death.

She claims it caused her permanent psychiatric damage.

The hearing will continue tomorrow.
