NSW: MP calla for investigation into hose claims
A New South Wales Greens MP is calling for a full police investigation into claimswoodchip mill workers were ordered to hose down protesters at Eden on the state's southcoast.
Greens MLC IAN COHEN says that if the claims are true, the responsible company officialsshould be charged with assault, at the least.
Anti-logging protestors claim mill workers were ordered to hose them down in freezingconditions on Friday night as they occupied the Eden chip mill wharf and a bulk carriership loading woodchips, bound for Japan.
Mr COHEN says he understands some protesters were in precarious positions on the woodchipconveyor belt high above the wharf and the ship when they were hosed down.
He says he'll be asking questions about the incident in parliament and insisting thatthe police minister conduct a thorough inquiry into the affair.
A police spokesman says more than 20 people were arrested and five people charged withremaining in enclosed land and hindering police during the protest.
One man faces an additional charge of possessing a cutting implement.
A further 15 people were issued with court attendance notices, and four teenagers wereissued with formal cautions.
