Dog 'shock collar' is cruel, says SPCA.(News)

The SPCA is probing the legality of a collar which gives a dog a light electrical shock when it barks.

The "shock collar", which costs about R2 000, is being evaluated by its Research Ethics Unit as the society wishes to prove it is unsafe.

The collar was imported from the US by a Tokai resident but was confiscated by Cape Town Customs officials because of outstanding tax and handed over to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, said its chief executive Allan Perrins.

He said the collar came with a sturdy, waterproof "shock box" with settings from 0 to 10, a charger, adaptor and instructions.
