Nov. 17--HYANNIS -- The New England Fishery Management Council yesterday approved a ban on big boats that catch herring in inshore areas along the Gulf of Maine.
The council agreed on the ban that runs from June to September, but it still has to finalize other parts of the herring management plan today.
"That was our main objective. The council did the right thing," Peter Baker said of the ban. Baker spoke on behalf of a broad coalition of commercial and recreational fishermen, environmentalists, whale watching organizations and ecotourists.
