Besides the ore carrier Cape Santa Milagria - now released from her detention for debt - three other ships were detained in Table Bay last week.
At time of writing, a 26 320-deadweight Liberian freighter and a 83 870-deadweight Marshall Islands-registered tanker were swinging at anchor while the legal beagles resolved whatever squabble had led to the ships' detention.
Lawyers may correct me, but I understand that South African law provides not only for the detention of ships that default on debt, but for the detention of ships associated even in the slightest way with the defaulting vessel. Thus our ports become the hunting ground of maritime lawyers who spearhead the legal processes involved.
